A claim promoted by several social media users suggests that the Jafrabad shooter, reportedly identified as 33-year-old Shahrukh, was seen with BJP leader Kapil Mishra during the latter’s provocative speech in noryh-east delhi. ‘Acharya ‘Pramod Krishnam shared an image where a man behind Mishra is highlighted in red. “He is the one who making an appeal for peace on TV (ये वही नेताजी हैं जो TV पर बैठ कर बाक़ायदा “शान्ति” की अपील कर रहे हैं. @HMOIndia)” – reads his tweet suggesting that the man is the shooter.
On February 23, Mishra gave a 3-day ultimatum to Delhi police to clear the roads in Jafrabad and Chand Bagh. He threatened to take things in his own hands if the police fail. Soon after his address, violence broke out in the area.
A Facebook page ‘Imran Bankwi’ shared an infographic alleging the same. It received over 700 shares.
The text on the infographic reads, “A Pro CAA Goon Was Seen Firing On Anti CAA Protestors In Delhi. This Happened Only After Kapil Mishra’s Inflammatory Speech. From Maujpur To Jaffrabad, Goons Are Attacking Anti CAA Protestors With Weapons & Burning Public Properties.”
Therefore, the page raised two allegations – 1) Jafrabad shooter was seen with Kapil Mishra, and 2) Shooter was part of a mob supporting the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
A Twitter wrote, “Who is the man behind Kapil Mishra – the one who has brandished a gun on the police – can anyone tell? (कपिल मिश्रा के पीछे कौन हैं – जो पुलिस पर पिस्तौल ताना है – ? – क्या कोई बता सकता है.)”
FACT-CHECK
Alt News has already shown that the shooter was part of an anti-CAA mob. We spoke with reporters on the ground who identified that the shooter emerged amid the group protesting against the CAA. After multiple visual observations, we could conclude that he was part of the anti-CAA faction.
To fact check the second claim – that the shooter was seen with Kapil Mishra – Alt News compared the facial features of the man seen with Mishra and Shahrukh. As evident, there are major dissimilarities in the nose, the hair, the beard.
The two individuals are therefore not the same, unlike what is claimed on social media. Shahrukh has reportedly been arrested by Delhi police.
