In the wake of the recent Hyderabad rape and murder case and the subsequent police encounter of the accused, a photograph has been shared widely by social media users with the claim that the man in the image is the juvenile convict of the Nirbhaya gang-rape case of 2012.

Dont mistake him for any bollywood star… He is one of NIRBHAYA’S RAPISTS!

This is Vinay Sharma.. The one who applied…

Numerous Facebook users have posted the above message, along with the picture purportedly showing the juvenile convict of the Nirbhaya case.

The complete message reads, “Dont mistake him for any bollywood star… He is one of NIRBHAYA’S RAPISTS! This is Vinay Sharma.. The one who applied for mercy petition & withdrew later. Till what point will the rapists of Nirbhaya remain alive? And The Juvenile Mohd. Afroz hasn’t yet been shown publicly.. So, God knows what privileges he’s been enjoying & how he’s grown in 7 years! Another celebrity like demeanor may be? Point is, till when will they be alive & living a life of freedom paid by our money!? The (then juvenile) NIRBHAYA RAPIST – MOHAMMAD AFROZ, is not in line for being hung apparently, is fed and protected by OUR TAX MONEY for 7 years. And he was one of the most brutal of the 5, who’s identity is protected till date & is still being tried under juvenile laws. He was just months away from being an adult.. So how’s all this OK? How does Nirbhaya’s parents get justice? Big salute to our Judicial system!”

The same information has been posted on Twitter in the form of an infographic, containing the same photograph. (Main accused in Nirbhaya case Mohammed Afroz is out of jail and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has given him a sewing machine and Rs.10,000. Now Afroz is a juvenile. Justice would be incomplete if he is not hanged- translation).

FACT CHECK: NOT A PHOTO OF JUVENILE CONVICT

Alt News found that the photograph circulated on social media is not of the juvenile convict in the Nirbhaya case. While the juvenile’s name was not released, it was reported by the media. However, the photograph shows Vinay Sharma, one of the four adult convicts sentenced to death for the crime. It was published by The Hindu in August 2016. Sharma worked as an assistant at a gym, and had tried to commit suicide in 2016.

It may be recalled that four of the five convicts in the Nirbhaya case have been sentenced to death, whereas the juvenile convict in the case was handed three years imprisonment for the crime by a juvenile court. The photograph shared on social media, however, does not represent the juvenile convict but an adult convict of the Nirbhaya case, Vinay Sharma.
