A video where the police are seen thrashing civilians was shared with the claim that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is being exercised in Assam. The clip has gone viral on Facebook.

Claim 1

On December 17, Facebook user Nusrat Khan shared the video in question. It has been viewed over 15,000 times. Nusrat’s post said, ” आसाम में #NRC में नाम ना होने की वजह से जबर्दस्ती डिटेंशन सेंटर ले जाया जा रहा है .. अगर ये vd देख के भी आपको कोई अहसास नही होता तो मुबारक हो आप इंसानी जमात से बाहर हो चुके हो.. अगर आपको मंजूर हे के आपका भी कोई अपना ,या आप खुद ऐसे ले जाये जाओ तो बैठे रहे घरों में ,अपने कामकाज पर ही धयान दो आप. एक आपके पास ही तो काम है,आपके पास ही तो टाइम नही ..delhi के और देश के दूसरे हिस्से के हज़ारो लोग तो फालतू बैठे हे न जो लाठियां खा रहे ,खून बहा रहे ,आप खाओ बिरयानी . और न्यूज़ या मोबाइल vd देख के ही अफ़सोस करते रहो.. कल ज़ब आपको या आपके फॅमिली मेंबर को डिटेंशन सेंटर ले जाये तब मत कहना के हमे पता नही था NO CAB NO NRC #WeRejectNRC #WeRejectCAA (People are forcefully being taken to detention centres in Assam after their names did not appear in NRC. Claim 2

On December 19, Facebook-user N K Choudhary Choudhary shared the same video with the text, “देश के बाकी हिस्सों में शायद पता ही नहीं है कि आसाम में ये काम चालू है किस तरह से NRC में नाम नहीं होने पर घर से उठाया जाता है जरा खुद भी देख लीजिये, इनका NRC में नाम नहीं है इसलिए घर से उठाया जा रहा है #Assam आज आपका विरोध बंद हो जाए तो कल आपका हाल ऐसा ही होगा । North East में लोग विरोध क्यों कर रहे हैं इस वीडियो को देखकर ये पता चल गया होगा आपलोगों को। [ In the rest of the country, perhaps it is not known that this work is going on in Assam, how people are picked up from their houses if there is no name in the NRC. Claim 3

On December 19, Facebook Sikandar Sblt posted the same video and said, “NRC me nam na aane ki wajah se dekhye gharon se kaise niakala ja raha hai detention jel le jane ke liye. Assam me. Agar aap ka andolan aaj ruk gaya to kal ko aap aisi musibat jhelne ke liye tyyar rahen”

Claim 4

On December 18, Ashraf M Salethur, a Facebook user posted the viral video in question with the text, “ಅಸ್ಸಾಮಿನಲ್ಲಿ #NRC ಪಟ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇಲ್ಲದವರನ್ನು ಮನೆಯಿಂದ ಹೊರ ಹಾಕುತ್ತಿರುವ ಭೀಕರ ದ್ರಶ್ಯ. ಮೋದಿಯ ಹಿಟ್ಲರ್ ಮಾದರಿಯ ಸರ್ವಾಧಿಕಾರಿ ಆಡಳಿತವು ಪ್ರಾರಂಭವಾಗಿದೆ.ಆದಷ್ಟು ಶೇರ್ ಮಾಡಿ [Translated from Kannada by Google: A terrible scam that is throwing people out of their homes in Assam’s #NRC list. FALSE CLAIM

It is visible that the viral video is tagged ‘DY 365 Exclusive.’

Alt News reached out to DY 365, an Assamese news channel. They confirmed that the video is theirs and is from 2017. According to them, the footage shows eviction from a forest area in Guwahati.

Alt New did a keyword search and found the video uploaded by DY 365 on November 28, 2017. According to the description, the incident depicts eviction of people from Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary.

Alt News also found The Wire’s article from November 29, 2017, which reported, “Since November 27, over 700 families have been rendered homeless in the outskirts of Guwahati after the Assam government carried out an eviction drive – as per a Gauhati high court order – in the area declared an eco-sensitive zone (ECZ) by the environment ministry around the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary.”

The claim on social media that the video shows people being detained under NRC in Assam is false. The video is from 2017 and it shows the eviction from areas around the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary.
