Old video of Indo-US joint military exercise shared as ‘Live encounter in Kashmir’

The video shows security personnel conducting a combing and sanitising operation inside households. This is followed by the sound of gunshots and a chase sequence, before a soldier is seen frisking the body of what appears to be a slain terrorist lying on the ground. In the video, a DD News reporter can also be seen ‘reporting’ the scene of the incident. The video has a logo of DD News on the top left corner.

The same video is viral in Malayalam with a similar claim, which says, “This is how when people with spine rule. When you’re hiding Terrorists in homes and when the army come for checking, they’re preventing the army by chanting ‘Bolo Takbir’. But the army is swatting them aside and terminating the terrorists on the spot.” (translated)

OLD VIDEO OF INDO-US JOINT MILITARY EXERCISE

On the basis of the DD News logo seen in the video, Alt News searched the DD News channel on YouTube and found a video published on October 25, 2016 with the title, “Know how Indian Army carries out search operations in Kashmir valley”. The video is posted below.

The video was a special report by DD News showing how the Indian army conducts combing operations whenever there is intelligence input of terrorists hiding in a particular village or locality. For further information, Alt News searched for the details of the reporter covering the incident, Nandita Dagar. Alt News found a tweet from September 25, 2016 which had a photograph of the reporter wearing the same dress as seen in the video. According to the tweet, the photograph was from a Indo-US joint military exercise Yudh Abhyas.

Yudh Abhyas was started in the year 2004 under the US Army Pacific Partnership Programme. Yudh Abhyas 2016 commenced on September 15, 2016 with a focus on counter-insurgency and anti-terrorism operations. It was conducted in Chaubattia Military Station at Ranikhet in Uttarakhand.

It may be reiterated that the video circulating on social media as a live encounter in Kashmir, is actually a Indo-US joint training video of September 2016.
