Amid mounting pressure on the JMM-led Jharkhand government over alleged recruitment irregularities at the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC), several official X handles linked to the BJP shared a video, purportedly from Jharkhand, showing a woman in distress being dragged and manhandled by uniformed officials on August 11.

BJP4India, @BJP4CGState (Chhattisgarh), BJP4Delhi and BJP4Rajasthan shared the viral video and claimed that in Jharkhand,  the protester was beaten with batons by the police as she tried to raise her voice for her rights. “Rahul Gandhi-Hemant Soren, this inhuman and cruel treatment of the country’s daughter who came seeking justice is utterly condemnable!”, BJP4Rajasthan’s post read.

Former BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri also shared the video on X with the same claim and said, “Rahul Gandhi ji-Hemant Soren ji, no sticks on daughters—justice is needed!” (Archive)

Several others also amplified the viral video with the same claim. (Archives: 1, 2, 3)

Fact Check

A reverse image search of keyframes from the video revealed the footage was posted on July 22 on Instagram with “#cjpprotest”. Hindi text superimposed over the video translates to: ‘This student was brutally beaten up; India’s daughter is pleading by holding the feet of the police.”

One policewoman visible in the video has a shoulder strap which mentions ‘Bihar’.

Notably, Patna witnessed the first CJP solidarity rally on July 22. Another video from the same Instagram page shows the distressed woman trying to show her bag and her books to prove that she is a student and reason with the police.

We also found another video uploaded by Darsh News on July 22, where the same woman could be seen being roughed up by police.

In the video, the reporter says that the visuals were from around the Hartali More flyover in Patna. Taking a cue, we were able to geolocate the place of the incident.

Thus, it can be conclusively stated that the viral video is being falsely circulated with claims that they are visuals of protesers in Jharkhand being roughed up. In reality, the video was filmed during a CJP solidarity rally in Patna.
