A 44 second long video is doing the rounds on social media, where Delhi Police deputy commissioner Sumit Jha is seen declaring that he is resigning from his position in solidarity with the protesting students.
The video was uploaded on You Tube by an user named Arya Yadav on July 28, and has garnered over 69,000 likes and more than 800,000 views till date. The caption of the video reads, “Delhi Police DCP has resigned”.
In the video, Jha is seen saying, “I am immediately resigning from the Indian Police Service. The government was expecting that I would face the press and spew lies about the students who are fighting for their rights on the streets. I was instructed to prove them guilty. I can’t be a part of any such system which might prevent from speaking the truth and compel me to implicate them on false charges. These students are no terrorists, they are the future of our nation. I joined the police force to stand with the truth, not to peddle lies. I can’t be a part of what the government is trying to do. From today, I am not with the government, but I stand with these students”.
Other social media users also shared the same video, echoing similar narrative, helping it go viral.

Fact Check
While viewing the viral video, we observed that the footage lacked fine detail and sharp edge definition, a visual characteristic commonly associated with AI-generated or deepfake content.
To look into the authenticity of the video, we used a few keyframes of the video to run reverse image searches. This led us to a video from July 23 uploaded on the official X handle of Delhi Police.

In this video, DCP Sumit Jha is seen saying that 480 Pakistan based social media handles had become active during the Jantar Mantar student protest, and that police had taken action against them.
The background of this video has two flags- the Indian National Flag, and the flag of the Delhi Police and the insignia of Delhi Police, which matches the background of the now viral video. This suggests that the viral clip was created using this original video, with the audio later manipulated.
In the next step, we uploaded the video on Detectvideo.AI to be sure whether the video is AI made or not. The result indicated a 67% possibility of the video being AI generated.
Furthermore, Delhi Police also posted a fact check on its X handle on July 26, stating that the viral video was AI generated and the entire claim of Jha’s resignation was false.
