A video shared on X by the official handle of the Indian Youth Congress purportedly shows BJP national president and Union health minister J P Nadda placing a copy of the Constitution of India near his feet while addressing the Rajya Sabha. The Congress youth wing condemned the move and remarked, “Why does BJP hate Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution so much(?)” and demanded an apology. The tweet garnered 140000 views. (Archive)

Congress leader Srinivas BV also tweeted the same video and sarcastically asked, “Honorable Nadda Ji… do you keep the Constitution under your feet?”. (Archive)

‘Political Commentator’ Saibpal Pandit tweeted the same video with the same claim. (Archive)

Several handles, including some linked to the Congress IT Cell, like Kerala Congress Sevadal and Telangana Youth Congress, amplified the viral video alongside the viral claim. (Archives- 1, 2, 3, 4)

Fact Check

Alt News found that the clip was taken from the live stream of the Rajya Sabha proceedings on February 11. At the 20:33 mark of the ANI livestream, Nadda lifts a large copy of the Constitution to display it to the House. While doing so, he fumbles with it briefly and appears to place it under the table, at which point the camera shifts to Rajya Sabha chairperson and vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar.

After the clip went viral on social media, several users defended Nadda by sharing a full video of the sequence of events. In this footage, Nadda is seen adjusting the large-sized Constitution under the table, placing it on the table, and then lifting it again to display it to the House. The video was also shared by Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi.

We have added the sequence of events below. The last two frames in the sequence have been left out of the video that has been made to go viral.

While it is not possible to ascertain whether the copy of the Constitution had slipped from Nadda’s hand or he had deliberately placed it below the table, it is indeed clear that he immediately picked it up or stopped before placing it on the floor and eventually kept it on his desk. Several Congress leaders and Congress-linked pages shared a clipped video with misleading claims.
