Since jewellery brand Tanishq released an advertisement featuring an inter-faith couple, ‘love jihad’ claims are widely circulating online.

Fact-check

We found media reports upon searching with keywords such as ‘Amul parlour’ and ‘Arya Samaj temple’. The incident took place in Bhanvarkuan, Indore. According to a Dainik Bhaskar report from October 14, the woman accused a man named Anand Patil of tricking her into a marriage. She alleged that Anand, who runs a milk parlour, said that he was an orphan.

Bhopal Samachar also identified the woman’s husband as Anand Patil. Local news website Swadesh had published a report on the incident.

Media outlet MP Breaking News spoke to the woman and uploaded her video statement on October 14. She identified herself as Neha Patil and her husband as Anand Patil in the interview. She informed that Anand’s first marriage took place in 2010 which wasn’t disclosed to her. He married Neha in 2017, telling her that he’s an orphan.

A video of a woman thrashing her husband’s Amul milk parlour, accusing him of tricking her into a marriage when he was wedded to another woman, is viral on social media. It has been shared with ‘love jihad’ spin despite the couple hailing from the same community. Tanishq’s controversial ad has given a rise to such claims. Videos of a woman assaulted by a man in Jharkhand and a father pleading his daughter to not get into a love marriage were shared with similar ‘love jihad’ spin.
