False rumours of child-kidnapping gangs on a prowl have emerged on social media leading to mob attacks across the country. A transgender person was beaten to death in West Bengal on the suspicion of being a child-lifter. At least 15 separate cases of violence have been reported from Madhya Pradesh. In fact, three Congress leaders, mistaken as kidnappers, were thrashed in the state. Two women were beaten by locals in Bihar on similar allegations.
Child-kidnapping rumours had caused at least 30 deaths in mob lynchings last year. The rampant misinformation has found credence once again with numerous individuals sharing unauthenticated videos and photographs across social media platforms.
1. Video of a mentally-challenged man falsely accused of child-kidnapping viral
A video where a man who seems visibly disoriented has been doing rounds on social media with the claim that a gang of organ traders were nabbed in Larankelo, Himachal Pradesh. It further alleges that the arrested members revealed that they are a gang of 500 people who prowl in groups of 15-20 which include women and children. The message urges people to not open their doors if they hear a baby cry at midnight.

The video depicts a mentally-challenged man who was roughed-up by locals in Madhya Pradesh’s Raisen district on false allegations of being a child-kidnapper. SHO Rajesh Mishra of Mandideep police station saw the video and confirmed to Alt News that the said incident took place in his area. “The incident took place in Sarakiya village. It took place at least 10-12 days ago. We had identified the person and he was later hospitalised. No FIR was filed regarding the matter. He was a mentally-challenged person. He had not kidnapped any child. The men were posing leading questions to him and he said anything,” he informed.

2. Photo of arrested sex racket gang from MP shared with child-kidnapping rumours
A photograph of policemen standing behind a group of people which includes both men and women is floating on social media with the claim that cops in Madhya Pradesh arrested a child-lifters gang of Rohingya Muslims who kidnap 17-18-year-olds. The message warns that 500-2000 such people are on a prowl to lift children from outside schools.
“सावधान मध्यप्रदेश में 500से 2000 लोगों की अलग अलग रोहिग्या मुस्लिमो की टोली आई है उनके साथ महिलाएं और उनके पास हथियार भी है और वो 17 या 18 साल तक के लड़कों को पकड़ के ले जाते है स्कूल के आस पास से .. इसको आप सारे ग्रुप में शेयर करें। भोपाल पुलिस C.S.P.Send to all group plz,” reads the complete message circulated with the photograph.
Alt News found that the incident was unrelated to child-kidnapping. The people seen with policemen were alleged members of a sex racket gang. They were arrested from a redlight area located on Lebad-Nayagoan four-lane road in Madhya Pradesh. The incident was reported by Patrika on July 15.

3. Video of 2017 Brazil prison riot shared as Rohingya Muslim kidnapping gangs on a prowl
A video showing dismembered bodies laid out in a room is floating on WhatsApp with the claim that 500-2000 Rohingya Muslims divided into small groups are on a prowl in Madhya Pradesh to lift children aged 17 and 18 years. The message suggests that these gangs are armed and they lift kids from outside schools. The video can be viewed here.

Alt News had debunked this video in June when it was viral with the false claim that organ smugglers travelling from Bihar to Jharkhand were killing innocents to sell their body parts.

4. Video of father-son duo alleging kidnapping attempt used to fuel child-abduction rumours
In a video widely circulating on social media, a father-son duo can be heard alleging that miscreants had attempted to kidnap the son. The video is circulating with a narrative about a child-lifting gang of organ traders arrested in Larankelo, Himachal Pradesh. The message states that the members of the arrested gang revealed that they are a group of 500 who prowl in smaller groups of 15-20 people that include women and children. It urges people to not open their doors if they hear a baby cry at midnight. The message attempts to alert the cities – Ambala, Yamunanagar, Kurukesta Karnal and Panipat – located in Haryana.

Upon contacting Satlapur police station, Alt News was told that police investigation found the boy’s claims to be implausible. “It’s an old incident. It took place nearly 10-15 days back. We verified the boy’s claim and found it to be implausible. The boy said that he had sensed someone coming towards him in the dark while he was going home from the path behind the buildings where he resides. According to the boy, sensing someone coming towards him, he took out his belt to scare him away. The boy also claimed that this person then ran away jumping a 6ft grill with extra fencing. We tried to verify his version and found that there were no footprints at the site and also there was no way anybody could jump that wall [grill]. No FIR was filed in the matter because it was totally implausible,” SHO Piyush Charles informed.

5. Video of drunk woman mistaken to be child-lifter shared as Rohingya Muslim gangs on a prowl
A video of a woman caught by a mob that interrogates her on suspicions of child-kidnapping has emerged on social media. It has been shared with the claim that gangs of Rohingya Muslims are on a prowl to lift children at night.

According to Patrika, an inebriated woman had mistakenly entered a person’s house in Bareli [Raisen district] on the night of July 19. Falsely suspecting her to be a child-kidnapper, a mob beat her up. The woman was later admitted to a hospital after the police intervened. Alt News corroborated the set of events with Bareli police.
