In the second week of February, Chinese and Indian armies started disengagement south of Pangong Tso after nine months of military standoff along the actual line of control in eastern Ladakh. The Indian Express reported that the Indian army released video clips and photographs that “show the Chinese troops dismantling bunkers and temporary fortifications made of stone, both manually and with JCB excavators.”

A video has been shared on social media against the backdrop of reports of the Indian army releasing footage. The video shows uniformed men in mountainous terrain surrounded by JCB machines. Twitter user @Shrish_1987 shared this video with a Hindi caption suggesting that the Indian army removed Chinese bunkers after 150 Chinese tanks and 500 PLA soldiers evacuated the area. The same video was also shared on Facebook by several users with the same Hindi caption. (Archive link)

Fact check

We broke down the video into multiple keyframes and performed a reverse image search of one of the keyframes. This led us to India TV’s video story captioned as, “Chamoli disaster: 56 bodies recovered, rescue operation underway”.

Scroll had reported on February 16 that a search and rescue operation was carried out by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) at Raini village in Chamoli district. This was after the Uttarakhand glacier burst which took over 60 lives while more than 140 people are still missing.

The official Twitter handle of ITBP had also tweeted the video on February 15.

In conclusion, a video of ITBP’s rescue operation in Uttarakhand was shared with the false claim that it shows the Indian army destroying Chinese bunkers in Ladakh after the disengagement of Chinese troops. A video showing visuals of the disengagement can be watched below.
