Fact Check

Upon a keyword search, we found an Onmanorama article titled, ’11 women arrested over assaulting man who cut ties with Irinjalakuda cult’. The article contains some stills taken from the video. The report said that the women belonged to the Emperor Emmanuel Church. The man, identified as Shaji, had recently cut ties with the church, and was accused of morphing and circulating pictures of women from the Church. Aloor Police had booked the women who assaulted him under various charges, including attempt to murder, the report added.

The report further said that Shaji had cut ties with the Zion retreat centre under the Emperor Emmanuel Church. When Shaji and his family were passing by in a car, the women blocked the vehicle, dragged Shaji out and assaulted him. They also damaged the car’s windshield.

Other media outlets including Times of India, Mathrubhumi and East Coast Daily also reported this incident.

Alt News contacted a police officer from the Aloor police station through a local journalist. The officer dismissed the viral claims confirming that the man was not a Muslim. According to the officer, the man and the women who assaulted him belonged to the same church. The police were still investigating the reason behind the assault.

Alt News reached out to Leslie Pereira, a member of the Emperor Emmanuel Church. He confirmed that Shaji, the man being assaulted in the video, was an ex-member of the Church and had recently cut ties with it.

Hence a video of a man being assaulted by several women is viral with a false communal angle. Several users shared the video claiming that the man being assaulted in the video was a Muslim. In reality, the women and the man are Christians and they belonged to the same church.
