A video immensely shared on social media shows prime minister Narendra Modi saying – “मैं पठान का बच्चा हूँ |मैं सच्चा बोलता हूँ , सच्चा करता हूँ | (I am son of a Pathan. I speak the truth, my actions are true.)” Below is a tweet by Rohan Gupta, chairman of Congress social media department.

The same video was earlier shared in 2019.

मैं पठान का बच्चा हु,मोदी जी कश्मीर रैली में,साला भक्त इसे हिन्दू शेर साबित करने में तुला रहता है।😸😸

In fact, it was quite viral in 2019.

Clipped video

The 10-second clip widely circulated on social media was picked up from prime minister Narendra Modi’s speech in Rajasthan after the Pulwama terror attack. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday threw a challenge to his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan, asking him to act honourably by bringing to justice those responsible for the Pulwama terror attack,” reported NDTV on February 23, 2019.

In the complete video, PM Modi does not call himself “son of a Pathan”, but attributes this statement to Pakistani PM Imran Khan. At around 1 minute into the video, he says, “…you (Imran Khan) have come from the world of sports. Come, India and Pakistan together will fight against poverty, illiteracy, disrespect – this is what I told him that day. And he told me, “Modiji main Pathan ka baccha hu, main saccha bolta hu aur saccha karta hu.” Today we need to put to test these words spoken by the Pakistani prime minister.”

In the clip viral on social media, the word “Modiji” was edited out before the PM began the “son of a Pathan” statement, which gave viewers the impression that the prime minister was talking about himself. However, he claimed that the words were spoken by Pakistani PM Imran Khan. A similar piece of misinformation was earlier debunked about Rahul Gandhi’s “aloo-sona machine” remark. The statement was attributed to the Congress president, when in fact, he claimed that the words were uttered by PM Modi.
