Individual users on Facebook and Twitter had shared the image with the same narrative.
Alt News found that the woman in the picture is Asia Ramazan Antar, a former Kurdish fighter, who died fighting ISIS in Syria in 2016. She was dubbed as “Angelina Jolie of Kurdistan” by some in the western media after the Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie. Antar was associated with the Kurdish Women’s Protection Units (YPJ).
The photograph circulating on social media was earlier published by BBC and The Times. This picture was originally clicked by a photographer named Alberto Hugo Rojas, who was duly credited by the outlets referred above. He had posted this image on Facebook, with a watermark of his name, on November 20, 2016. Asia Ramazan Antar was reportedly killed by Islamic State militants in northern Syria in 2016.
A photograph of a Kurdish woman fighter was circulated on social media as of an Indian army jawan guarding the border in the sweltering heat of Rajasthan.
