Video from Bangladesh shared as female BJP worker dragged by TMC goons in West Bengal

A video of a group of people forcibly dragging away a young woman while she keeps pleading is massively viral on Twitter and Facebook. People can be heard conversing in Bengali in the video hence, it’s being claimed that the video shows an incident during post-poll violence in West Bengal.

Twitter user Anand Kumar shared the visuals on May 6. More than 700 handles retweeted it at the time of writing.

Fact-checking outlet Boomlive found a longer and higher quality version of the video dated April 27, 2021. It was uploaded by a Facebook user named Rahmat Ali and is over four minutes long.

According to his post, the incident is from Bangladesh’s Ghazipur district. A Hindu woman Sarawanti Mandal had married Kamarul Islam, a Muslim. The two met while working in a factory. She soon converted to Islam and changed her name to Jannatul Firdaus. But her family was against the union. Her father forcibly brought her home with the help of the police and local administration. The viral video was taken when her family members were dragging her home against her will.

This led us to a report from April 26, 2021, published on Bangladesh-based Purbo Poshchim Bangladesh. It states that the incident occurred on April 22. In the video, Sarawanti is pleading at the feet of local councillor Giyasuddin to let her live with her husband Kamarul. However, Sarawanti’s father Shankar Chandra Mandal filed a case under the Women and Child Harassment Prevention Act, stating that she was under 18 years of age. However, Kamarul argued that she was 18.
