“वाहन जुर्माना बड़ा कर ग़रीब लोगों की इज्जत से खेला जा रहा है ऐसे कानून से पुलिसकर्मी अपने आप को राजा समझने लगे अंग्रेज फरमान चलाया जा रहा है इसे जल्द ही रोका जाए नही तो ऐसा होगा की पुलिस वाले लोग किसी की खून ही न कर दे!” (“Poor people are being harassed by increasing traffic fines, policemen consider themselves kings, oppressive rules are in place, this must be stopped otherwise these policemen could well murder someone- translation”).

The above message is viral on social media along with a video which shows policemen mercilessly beating up a biker. It has been claimed that police is committing atrocity on the poor since they are unable to pay hefty fines. The video, posted by a user RJD Siwan, has been shared over 23,000 times so far. A Twitter user Bobi Tyagi, who claims to be a Samajwadi Party (SP) leader, has posted the video claiming barbarity by the UP police.

The video is viral on Facebook with the identical claim.

WHAT IS THE TRUTH?

A closer look at the video revealed a registration plate of a vehicle, on which ‘CG28’ can be seen clearly written. CG28 is the RTO code of Mungeli district in Chhattisgarh.

On the basis of this information, Alt News searched Google with relevant key words. A number of news articles came up in the search result, pertaining to this incident. According to a report published by Dainik Bhaskar dated September 14, 2019, “This video shows police in Mungeli district beating up a person. The Dainik Bhaskar correspondent was present at the spot when the video was being shot. He told us that the incident is one week old. A drunk person was creating ruckus on the road. The police first tried to explain, but he would not listen. He was then taken to the police station. There, he claimed to be related to several top politicians and even threatened to transfer the officials present.” (translated).

Dainik Bhaskar‘s video report also shows visuals from inside the police station, wherein the drunk can be seen creating a row.

According to another report, “A drunk person was swearing at a public square in Mungeli. Thanedar in the city kotwali, Ashish Arora along with two jawans reached the spot and tried to make the person sit inside an autorickshaw, but he was not willing to. Seeing that the drunk was not listening to what the police had to say, an enraged Ashish Arora and other police officials thrashed him.” (translation).

It may be noted that the video of the person being thrashed by the police, is not related to the new traffic regulations. Ever since the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act has come into force from September 1, Alt News has fact-checked several old and/or unrelated videos which have been shared with false context.
