Fact-check: Did Nilkamal manufacture dustbins with ‘Pakistan Murdabad’ sticker?

A picture of a dustbin with ‘Pakistan Murdabad’ (Death to Pakistan) written on it is making the rounds on social media. The dustbin has the logo of furniture manufacturer Nilkamal. Twitter user Shipra Dutta shared this picture and wrote, “Plasticware brand Nilkamal just made me so happy”. The post amassed more than 507 retweets at the time of writing. (Archive link)

A fan page for actress Kangana Ranaut also tweeted the image with the same message.

Several other Twitter handles posted the image, out of which Gunjesh Gautam Jha, @humlogindia, PN Rai, and Jitendra Bhardwaj are some of the prominent ones.

Fact-check

Using a keyword search, Alt News located the original image in a Patrika report dated February 22, 2019. According to the article, following the Pulwama terror attack, an unknown individual had applied ‘Pakistan Murdabad’ stickers on 10 to 12 dustbins at a railway station in Udaipur. As soon as the authorities were notified, they removed the stickers.

Local media outlet Udaipur Times had also covered the incident.

Furthermore, Alt News also reached out to the Nilkamal Group for more information on the viral claim. The company clarified that neither does it manufacture dustbins with such messages and nor does it apply such stickers on them. We were informed that Nilkamal supplies dustbins across the country with only the company logo, name, and contact information printed on them. The company did not have any information about the person who had pasted the stickers.

Therefore, a picture of a ‘Pakistan Murdabad’ sticker on a dustbin applied by an unknown miscreant from 2019 was recently shared with the false claim that Nilkamal had manufactured dustbins with such a message.
