On January 18, Alt News received several requests to verify a video of a man sliting a minor’s throat, shared on social media with child-lifting rumours. This is the third year that rumours of child kidnappers on the prowl are circulating online. In 2018, these false messages had led to more than 70 mob attacks and 33 deaths. Alt News has debunked multiple photos and videos falsely shared as child-kidnapping.

We have not embedded the video in this report owing to its graphic nature. The screenshots below show the first few frames of the video.

Video of minor’s murder in Rajasthan falsely shared as child-lifting

Alt News performed a reverse image search on Google and found a January 9 report by Dainik Bhaskar. As per the report, this incident took place in Karad, a village in Rajasthan’s Sikar district, on January 8. Accused Kailashchand Raigar (21) murdered his 10-year-old cousin. Superintendent of Police (SP) Sikar Kunwar Rashtradeep told Dainik Bhaskar that Raigar killed the child to take revenge on his relative’s family. Times Now reported on January 9 that Raigar was “upset with his uncle who often nagged him for being poor in studies”.

Alt News spoke with SP Sikar Kunwar Rashtradeep who reiterated the above-mentioned details and added, “The accused was arrested on the same day. There have been no recent child-kidnapping attempts in the area”.

SP Rashtradeep further clarified that the viral video is being shared on social media with unrelated videos and images.

Thus, a video of a minor’s murder by a relative in Rajasthan’s Sikar district was shared on social media with false child-lifting rumours.
